Khadija Ismayilova is an Azerbaijani investigative journalist who was arrested on trumped-up charges on 5 December 2014. Khadija was targeted for her courageous work exposing issues that the government would prefer to keep hidden – such as the business interests of Azerbaijan’s first family.

Khadija has also been a vocal human rights advocate, focusing most recently on cases of political prisoners. She has called for individual sanctions against Azerbaijani government officials responsible for serious human rights violations.

Khadija's arrest is part of an unprecedented crackdown against civil society and critical media. In the past seven months, well-known human rights activists and journalists have been arrested on spurious charges, including Leyla Yunus, Intigam Aliyev, Rasul Jafarov, Anar Mammadli and Seymour Hezi.

We call for the immediate and unconditional release of Khadija, Leyla, Intigam, Rasul, Anar, Seymour and all of Azerbaijan's jailed political prisoners.
